[CONFESSIONS] ‘I’m Hiding My Interracial Relationship From My Parents’

Lindsay Czarniak, wife of TODAY co-host Craig Melvin, is continuing her conversations about race in a new Instagram video where she sits down with her own mother to discuss the topic. Earlier this month, Czarniak talked to her mother-in-law Betty Jo Melvin about the moment she learned her son was dating a white woman and this time, she flipped the question and asked her mom what she thought when she learned her daughter was dating a Black man. Thanks tczarniak for being willing to share so much,” Czarniak, 42, explained in the video caption. Interracial Dating: More Latina Women Look Outside Their Race

Terri Upshaw called from Washington, D. She knows her story — a Shakespearean tale of romance, a runaway daughter and bitter, unforgiving parents — has the Bay Area buzzing. And yet. The story broke in the Washington Post.

I began writing this piece with the intention to understand why some Black men purposely choose not to date Black women. I whole-heartedly believe many.

Black men are far more likely than black women to marry outside of the race — and more likely to get married period. Is it time for black women to expand their search for love? More than a decade ago, I was having dinner with a dear friend who is white. We were talking about our hopes for our eldest children, including dreaming about their perfect mates.

But she stopped me. Why was I — a progressive, reasonably tolerant supporter of diversity — balking at the thought of my son in particular having an interracial marriage? It would be a long time before I got to the bottom of my feelings. The truth was that my white friend never worried about whether her children hated themselves because they were white.

But self-hatred has been my constant concern since the day my children were born, and I tried to do everything as a parent to reinforce their racial self-esteem. The same has not been true for black women, who are devalued by white standards and have historically lacked any real opportunities to marry out. Among Asians, the pattern runs the other way.

And so, we entered the last decade in a bit of a quandary for the race. If black men were not choosing black women as their mates, and men of other races did not find them attractive, where did that leave black women? Instead, the one-way direction of interracial marriage — black men marrying white women — reinforced the racial stereotype of the undesirable black female.

5 Signs Dating a Single Parent Isn’t Right for You

No matter how much chemistry you share or how much you both value your relationship, there will be times when the kids interrupt, take precedence over your relationship, and require the devoted attention of their parent. You’ll plan a special outing and— boom —someone gets sick. Or you’ll have a long day and just want to unwind, only to find the kids ramped up and rowdy.

Dating someone with kids has its perks, but it also has its challenges, all of which require careful consideration, especially for first-timers. If this reality gives you pause, it’ll be important for you to consider whether you’re ready, willing, and able to embrace all that comes with dating into a family.

I’m tired of being people saying I don’t date “black” people. To me who wants to limit their resources in the dating pool? My parents always told me I have to be.
